Madonna in Art

Madonna in Art

In 1977,Madonna Louise Ciccone moved from Michigan to New York City, re-christening herself simply ‘Madonna’. Six years of hard work in the clubs of Manhattan with a succession of bands propelled her to the forefront of the New York scene. In 1983, her self-titled debut album was released, and the hit singles ‘Holiday’ and ‘Borderline’ soon followed. Then came seventeen consecutive top ten hits, a further ten albums, and roles in nineteen feature films, from her debut in the 80’s classic Desperately Seeking Susan to the steamy thriller Body of Evidence.

Multitalented, controversial in her own proud sexuality and a dedicated campaigner for sexual tolerance, Madonna is one of the great Millennial Icons, a one-woman pop phenomenon who has pushed back and blurred the boundaries of the music, film and fashion worlds. ‘Madonna in Art’ is a celebration of the Pop Goddess at every stage of her career. A testament to her unique global impact, it features work by over a hundred artists, including Andrew Logan, Bruni, Sebastian Kruger, Al Hirschfeld, Donna Lief and Peter Howson. These images range across every role Madonna has played on the world stage, from erotic dancer to the dignified figure of Eva Peron in Evita.

Blog Design Solutions

Blogging has moved rapidly from being a craze to become a core feature of the Internet—from individuals sharing their thoughts with the world via online diaries, through fans talking about their favorite sports teams or music, right up to serious business minds discussing industry futures.

And that includes you, right? If you haven’t got a blog already, you want to start one, and want to find out how. If you have already got one, you want to know how to customize it, and make it look cooler than everybody else’s. In either case, this is the ideal book for you.

In this book, a team of renowned web designers take you through the ins and outs of putting together great blogs. They waste no time harking on about the philosophy of blogs, or the community behind them. Instead, they get straight to the practical details, showing how to set up a basic blog in some of the world’s most popular blogging engines – Movable Type, ExpressionEngine, WordPress, and Textpattern. With your blog set up, they then show you how to build great looking, usable layouts for your blog. The last chapter even shows you how to build your very own PHP/MySQL-based blog engine!

With this book in hand, you’ll have found your way to blog heaven in no time!

Summary of contents:

Chapter 1: The “Web Log”
Chapter 2: Creating a Local Test Environment for Your Blog
Chapter 3: Movable Type
Chapter 4: ExpressionEngine
Chapter 5: WordPress

Origami-The Art of Paper Folding

April 3, 2007

Origami-The Art of Paper Folding

In Origami: The Art of Paper Folding, Gay Merrill Gross offers an excellent selection of innovative, simple but splendid origami models, several of which are her own creations.
A concise introduction to terms, symbols, and folding techniques plus clear diagrams made using standard origami notation make the step-by-step instructions easy to follow. This book includes models that can be made with one piece of paper -with suggestions on variations, such as a charming flapping bird; and a few models that are made with two or more pieces of paper. I particularly enjoyed the kitty, made by folding and ingeniously assembling two pieces of paper.
There are complete instructions for all the models shown on the cover, and inside you will also find photos for all the other models being taught. I will recommend it as a solid introduction to the delightful world of paper folding for people of all ages, or as great addition to the library of any origami enthusiast.
